What Is Tonnage (Cooling Capacity)?

Tonnage describes an air conditioner or heat pump's cooling capacity — one ton equals 12,000 BTUs of heat removal per hour. Residential systems commonly range from 1.5 to 5 tons depending on home size, insulation, and layout.

This definition is pending sign-off from a licensed HVAC reviewer.

Why It Matters to You

A system sized in the wrong tonnage for your home — too big or too small — causes real comfort and efficiency problems, not just a difference in cost.

Practical Guidance

Bigger isn't automatically better: an oversized unit short-cycles and struggles with humidity control, while an undersized one runs constantly and never quite catches up on hot days.
