How HVAC Works

What Is a BTU?

A BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the standard unit used to measure heating and cooling capacity — specifically, how much heat a furnace can produce or an air conditioner can remove per hour. Residential equipment is commonly rated in BTUs per hour, or grouped into "tons" for cooling capacity.

This definition is pending sign-off from a licensed HVAC reviewer.

Why It Matters to You

BTU capacity, matched correctly to your home's size and insulation, is a bigger factor in comfort than efficiency rating alone — an oversized or undersized BTU rating causes real problems either way.

Practical Guidance

Don't assume a bigger BTU rating is automatically better — correct sizing based on your specific home matters more than maximizing capacity.
