What Is an Evaporator Coil?

The evaporator coil is the indoor coil, usually mounted above or near the furnace, where refrigerant absorbs heat from indoor air as it passes over the coil. That heat absorption is what cools the air before it's circulated back through the home's ductwork.

This definition is pending sign-off from a licensed HVAC reviewer.

Why It Matters to You

A dirty or frozen evaporator coil is one of the most common reasons an AC blows warm air or loses cooling capacity mid-summer.

Practical Guidance

Change your air filter on schedule — restricted airflow from a dirty filter is a leading cause of evaporator coil freeze-ups.
