How HVAC Works

What Is a Thermostat?

A thermostat is the control device that reads a home's indoor temperature and signals the HVAC system to heat or cool as needed to reach a setpoint. Modern smart thermostats add scheduling, remote control, and usage data on top of that basic function.

This definition is pending sign-off from a licensed HVAC reviewer.

Why It Matters to You

Thermostat placement and calibration affect system performance directly — a thermostat located near a heat source, draft, or direct sunlight can cause a system to short-cycle or run at the wrong times.

Practical Guidance

If your home's temperature feels inconsistent with what the thermostat reads, have its placement and calibration checked before assuming the HVAC equipment itself is malfunctioning.
