Indoor Air Quality

What Is an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator)?

An HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) brings fresh outdoor air into a home while exhausting stale indoor air, recovering some of the heat from the outgoing air to precondition the incoming air. It improves ventilation without simply losing all that conditioned energy outside.

This definition is pending sign-off from a licensed HVAC reviewer.

Why It Matters to You

Modern, well-sealed homes can trap stale air and excess humidity indoors — an HRV addresses that without the full energy penalty of just opening windows in a Chicago winter.

Practical Guidance

HRVs are most worth considering in newer, tightly-sealed homes; a technician can assess whether your home's construction and current ventilation justify one.
